A comprehensive site that converts to and from 164 currencies, updating the rates daily. Figures are given to four significant figures. Includes a list of exchange rates for every day since 1990. An excellent demonstration of conversion also giving median results.

Ace Kids Java Games
A collection of seven great educational games. Logical thinking and mathematical skills need to be used in these applications that vary in difficulty. Comprehensive explanations are given for the mathematics behind the games.

Active Maths
The aim of Active Maths is to provide interactive resources that will enhance and enrich the teaching and learning of maths. The activities can be used either by individual pupils, small groups or with the whole class using a projector or an interactive whiteboard. Many of the activities can also be carried out by individuals or small groups using one computer.
The activities can be evaluated and used online and are available on CD.

Algebra.help
Another well-indexed help site with lessons, resources and worksheet. What makes this site slightly different is an equation calculator that demonstrates how to solve equations and shows the working. Printable worksheets, resources and lists.

Allmath.com
A fun maths site that tries to do many things with a large number of resources including flash cards, multiplication tables, a metric converter and a glossary. Nevertheless, this is a sound junior site with many good points.

Ancient Geometry
More than just a history of geometry, it is a comprehensive and well-written history of all mathematics.

Ask Doctor Maths
A useful maths resource for all age groups which is a question and answer service for maths students and their teachers. It contains a searchable archive is available by level and topic, as well as summaries of Frequently Asked Questions.

Bamdad's Math Comics Page
A wonderful selection of mathematical cartoon strips that will make even the most exasperated student laugh and see the funnier side of maths.

Basic Facts.
Basic Facts provides effective methods to teaching and learning the four rules of basic mathematics. The site has two Java applets, one of which can generate an 'endless succession' of mathematical problems and another that allows you to customise sheets of test-style questions.

BasketMath Interactive
Finding it difficult to inspire yourself to do maths problems? This site rewards a correct answer to one of its many maths problems with an animated basketball shot!.

An evolving selection of really good mathematical puzzles. The difficulty of the puzzles usually lies in the complicated wording, and as a result, they will encourage students to think laterally. All the teasers are rated by difficulty. Highly recommended and good for group work.

Cadbury Learning Zone: Maths
Practise your maths skills with these engaging activities themed around chocolate. Take the challenge to design your own chocolate bar or tour the factory whilst completing the interactive exercises. There is a special section for teachers, containing 40 downloads and national numeracy strategy links.

Fun with fractions. Using colourful geometric shapes, this site allows investigation of patterns and introduction of fractions and their functions. A good resource for improving numeracy and teacher notes are included in this accessible site.

Freeserve Revision - Maths
A free service which focuses on all pupils taking exams from Key Stage 1 to A-level in Maths. The format concentrates on key revision points and exam practice.

Fruit Game (The)
Fun and frustrating online logic game. The computer and the pupil take it in turns to remove fruit from the tables. The player who takes the last piece of fruit is the winner. The game includes playing rules and, thankfully, a discussion of winning strategies!

Fun with Spot
Spot is an early learner and children can go through first experiences with him through a series of interactive games which encourage basic literacy and numeracy skills. There is a section for grown-ups suggesting the most suitable Spot titles for the Literacy Hour and online photocopiable activity sheets for use in the classroom.

Proving that pictures speak louder than words, this fantastic American glossary brings often uninspiring mathematical terms to life through graphics. An extensive collection of mathematical concepts covering grades one to eight. Good homework or classroom aid.

Harper Collins Children's Site
This is an educational site provided by Harper Collins, the publishing company. Interesting content in maths, reading and general topics. The maths section is divided into three levels with activities and games. A fun and topical resource for both pupils and teachers.

Homework Solver
A very attractive site aimed at 7-13 year olds. Claiming to take the work out of homework, 'Homework Solver' provides lessons in English, geography, history, science and maths.

How Tall Is That?
Scientists using remote sensing photos can estimate the height of objects in the photos by noting the time of day and studying the length and angles of shadows. The site provides a lesson plan that puts this into practice. A good resource for ratio and proportion.

Interactive Assessment Worksheets
Worksheets and exercises for a variety of subjects are included in this useful site. The mathematical problems have several different solution strategies and are well presented for younger pupils. Reading exercises on Roald Dahl books are included for fun!

Mathematics Problems For 12-14 Year Olds
This site provides a sound introduction to the Egyptian number system with colourful graphics. There are a number of problems to investigate and practice the system. The pyramid building problem would make a good group activity.

Maths For Kids
Designed by primary school children, this resource lists practice word problems, shows how to solve them and allows pupils to submit their own mediaeval problems. Ideal for students having difficulty 'translating' words into mathematical form. Introduces different types of graph and diagram whilst explaining every step of the process.

A Shapes, Space and Measures site that has three chapters covering angles, rotation, translation, reflection, perimeter, area and volume. This is an accessible site devoted to developing numeracy. Learn, test yourself and move onto the next page. Almost too colourful!

A sophisticated and easily navigable maths resource including a maths dictionary, a puzzle section, career advisor and a mathematical museum. Favourite feature is 'number land', click on any number and get a fun number fact file, complete with rhymes! A top site.

MathStories
This site is a treasure trove of mathematics puzzles! It contains over 4000 word problems for children that encourage critical thinking, as well as multiplication and multi-step problems. Teasers attempt to be topical, including well-known characters like Harry Potter.

Mathsweb
A practical and useful resource for teachers, parents and governors which contains lots of ideas, information, advice and resources to help plan and deliver the National Numeracy Strategy in school and at home.

Mega Maths
Here you find mathematical problem solving activities for Key Stage 2 pupils from the BBC educational resources. It includes multiplication and shape-related games.

Multiplication Matho.
Multiplication Matho consists of quick-fire multiplication questions. With pressure to beat the clock, pupils must find the correct answers to the question in order to complete the game.

Multiplication Tables With Ollie The Alien
This is a colourful and simple interactive multiplication device. Simply choose a times table between one and 12, or select the any table option. Questions will appear and for every correct answer, Ollie the alien will applaud! It is good for quick-fire testing.

Mysterious Tangram (The)
Not so mysterious - tangrams are seven shapes that fit into a square * these are a little more devilish! Test your shape skills with these centuries-old tile games from China. The site contains six different tangram games that will effectively improve shape awareness.

NCES Classroom
A comprehensive resource with fun quizzes, activities and much more. Part of the American National Centre for Education Statistics, this site contains games, activities, a glossary, famous mathematicians' profiles, graphs, word of the day and more.

Necklace In A Box
A compelling site that takes pupils on a mystery hunt for a missing necklace. Clues are given as simple division and multiplication questions. A good group activity as the site appeals to children with varied skills.

Numberwork
Journey with Zack from Acapulco to Chihuahua by successfully completing six maths games and finding the secret code. Numberwork provides a good opportunity to develop numeracy as each game can be played at two levels, either easy or hard. A fun way to practice and apply mathematical skills.

Nuts About Geometry
Almost everything you do in your daily life involves geometry in some way! This site was designed by four pupils for a maths competition. It contains activities on shape, some trivia and a glossary. A really good site - the designers' enthusiasm is contagious!.

Online Exhibits @ The Exploratorium
This is a multimedia site from a museum in San Fransisco containing investigations, optical illussions and puzzles. Not strictly mathematics, but an excellent addition to classroom activities. Some of the sections require specific software.

Premier League And Football League
Football statistics for all league clubs in the UK from origin to 1997 in a simple table. The results form a 'super league' including information on home and away wins, most goals and total points. Good for ordering and sorting numbers by size. Could also be used to improve data handling skills.

Prongo.com For Kids
A really well designed magazine-style site. As well as the selection of games and quizzes, it contains jokes and e-cards. The games include some old favourites like tic-tac-toe as well as some designed to help with math skills. Games and quizzes need Flash.

Puzzlemaker
Puzzle Maker is an award-winning and fun resource that is one of the best group activity sites for primary teachers and children. A large variety of personalised word puzzles, cryptograms and number puzzles can be generated by the server. Puzzles can be downloaded. Teacher assistance is required for maximum value.

Quandaries And Queries
Have you ever lost sleep over a tricky problem? Have no fear, for this is the perfect website for those questions you just can't solve by yourself. A panel of consultants will try to answer any mathematical question. An archive of these responses is included.

Quantum BrainBenders.
Quantum Brainbenders is a seriously good site for improving mental arithmetic under pressure. Even teachers may find the problems frustrating! Three levels from easy to braniac are offered and there is an archive of past problems.

Quia Learning Games
An immense number of animated concentration and flashcard games designed to help pupils with a variety of curriculum subjects including mathematics. Fill out the online form and the site will create a suitable activity. You can also submit your own game to the site. A stimulating and generally first-rate site.

ReviseWise Maths
This is a BBC revision website for maths learners at Key Stage 2. It has separate, useful sections on numbers, data handling, shape, space and measure, mental maths and games.

Roll 'Em - Probability
A resource that tackles probability in a simple and understated way! Start by rolling the virtual dice any number of times and the results are graphed automatically on a bar graph. Tackle the worded explanation only after experimentation with dice.

Room 108 Math.
Room 108 Math is an immense resource containing a number of mathematical and numeracy-based activities. This is an excellent approach to calculations which is bound to improve understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and addition.

A good site for reviews and evaluations of resources (a service Schoolzone provides for DfES/Becta). 50,000 free web-based resources in a searchable database. Also has as earch bale database of education suppliers and trainers.

Science U KS3
A fun site which brings together various mathematics and science topics such as geometry and observational astronomy. Although it may be slightly difficult to find specific information, this is a rewarding set of articles and activities.

Shape Surveyor
Area and perimeter of rectangles are practised in this basic resource. There are four levels of difficulty from easy to super brain. For each correct answer, a piece of an archaeological site is revealed until the ruin is finally uncovered.

Simply Number Sense
Feel lost without you calculator? This maths site aims to rid you of your dependence. The site has several main areas, the Homeroom, Maths Basics, Memorisation, Mental Maths and Homework. Lots of help is given and there is a special quiz section of printable tests.

Starters
A lot of time can be wasted at the start of lessons as the previous activities are completed. These simple starters can speed up this delay. Hopefully these will become part of the lesson and pupils will become keen to write answers up on the board. It is frequently updated.

Symmetry and Pattern: The Art of Oriental Carpets
Oriental rugs, renowned for their beauty, can also be used to analyse symmetry, asymmetry, and patterns. However, the patterns are never quite as formulaic as expected. There is a gallery of rugs on the site and through analysis it may be seen where the true patterns are.

Syvum Maths Activities
A sound testing of basic maths skills. The site contains maths worksheets and word problems on subtraction, addition, multiplication, division and more. Work is divided into four levels of difficulty. All problems and questions are marked online.

Tailor O'Maths
All about Pi. Visit this site to find out and understand what Pi is and how it is calculated.

Tangrams.
Tangrams are made from seven shapes which all fit together to make a square and here at this site, roughly twenty tangrams are used to tell a short, fun multimedia film. This site should stimulate thoughts on shape and design. Activity sheets are available by e-mail.

Historical And Geographical Connections,A really good site providing pictures, photographs, historical and geographical background to tessellation, which add interest value to a purely mathematical site. There are downloadable pictures and ideas and notes for classroom use.

The Abacus (The)
Pretty much everything you could need to know about the abacus, its history and how to use it.

The ArithmAttack (The)
A great aid in developing basic mental arithmetic, this site tests how many simple divisions, multiplications, additions and subtractions you can do in 60 seconds, strangely fun and addictive.

The Web Classroom (The)
Divided into three levels of difficulty, this Australian site offers tutorials on fractions, numeracy, algebra and geometry. It contains basic information, true or false tests and interactive tests with results and test analysis. Compelling and fun.

Top Study
This innovative resource for Irish teachers and pupils features a 'cyberclass' with interactive, Irish curriculum-based educational tools and tutorials, a searchable database of past papers and a timetable of examinations.

Victoria Search
Good cross-curricular site. Learn about Victoria, British Columbia as you search for a necklace by solving division problems. It can be quite slow to load, but good practice of division and will raise questions.

Visual Fractions
Comprehensive site that acts as an online lesson on all aspects of fraction work. Identifying, comparing, calculating with and writing fractions as mixed numbers are all included. Pictorial examples are like numberlines and pie charts are included to clarify thinking.

An interactive learning site encouraging younger children to think about the environment, particularly animals and plants in Great Britain.

Willoughby Home
A huge list of multimedia maths resources from Canada. It contains critical thinking games, elementary maths resources and puzzles. Fantastic for improving numeracy and learning general knowledge and highly recommended.

Worksheet Factory
A wonderful program which allows teachers to create a range of worksheets for any primary / secondary age in maths and vocabulary building. Maths subjects include addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication tables, graphs, fractions, percentages and rounding, which can all be customized. Sadly it is not free, but it is fairly reasonable.
